The North End of Newport, RI is dominated by industrial uses and strip retail. Skyrocketing housing costs are challenging residents in adjacent residential areas. Kim Salerno and Peter Friedrichs served in staff
leadership roles to develop an urban plan to frame future real estate development in this area. The plan leverages a major transportation project to reimagine the neighborhood as a 21st century activity center. Themes of opportunity, connectivity, resilience, equity, and quality provide a planning guide for public officials, residents, and developers. The plan was commenced during a development moratorium and completed during the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, shifting to a socially-distant public engagement model to complete the plan in accordance with government public health orders. Learn more about the North End Urban Plan at cityofnewport.com/neup
